With a family of 13 children it was hard to get everyone together in one spot at one time but here is a picture showing a good majority of “the original crew” at our granny’s house on the 9-mile in North Carolina. Our granddaddy built this house and granny was so proud to call it home for so many years! This original crew and the kitchen in this house is where many of our recipes derive from.
Starting with the top-left we have Tony Ray and Rick.
Lou Ella (Skip’s mama) is the woman in the 2nd row
Dee (Tiff’s mama) starts off the 3rd row next to Big Vikki, Granny (where it all started), and Andy.
We thought it would be good to share where we came from so you as our viewers could see our credentials as chefs. Who could not be an excellent chef with this southern family? Need I say more? We all collaborated (or at least some of us) to bring you not only our memories but also our DEEP North Carolina recipes.
When you stepped inside our granny’s house you were sure to smell collard greens boiling, see biscuits on the stove, and have a plate of grits and eggs waiting for you. No these are not stereo types, these are actual events. We ate them with tarnished spoons, and loved every single bite.
Today’s chefs are too busy adding a million ingredients and making the plate look fancy. That’s not how we do it. We have full-on hog roasts that cook in a hole in the ground and it may not look too pretty on the plate with sprigs of rosemary on top or limes wedges on the side but let us be the first to tell you that it is mouth-watering good. We hope to provide you a with a window into the home of our family and a look at what REAL Southern cooking tastes like. Do not expect to lose inches experiencing our recipes… they are not low-fat, they are mow-fat.
We hope that along with each recipe we give you a glimpse into our childhood, our gatherings, and our lives.
Keep in mind… as these original crew members moved away, got married, and started families of their own, we have adapted to our surroundings and so have our recipes. I hope you enjoy our stories, as well as our food. Let us be the first to tell you, these guys can cook but (this is important)… Do NOT change our recipes without agreeing that the taste will surely follow! Do so at your own risk.
We hope each of our recipes includes a story and we also hope that any recipe you add will include a story from your family or childhood!
We would also like to take a minute to say that out of these 7 featured in the photo, 4 of them are no longer with us (along with a few that are not shown here)… I hope y’all are eating like kings at granny’s table in heaven!
